One Little
Indian signee Tusks aka Emily Underhill is quickly making a name for
herself with her panoramic glacial sound vistas. Latest single ‘Toronto’
(written in the city it’s named after) is the sound of an artist arriving at
the beginning of her peak artistic maturity.
Nestled
somewhere between the freeform ultra-slick urban balladeering of James Blake
and the frosty and ethereal openness of Sigur Ros, ‘Toronto’ is by turns subtle
and deeply emotive, slowly mounting to a breathless climax that highlights
Emily’s sheer depth of feeling as an artist.
Produced by Emily herself,
alongside Jack Garratt producer and long-term collaborator Brett Cox, ‘Toronto’
is the first taste of her debut album due later this year. Arriving
to a backdrop of keen interest in the media, Emily’s expansive sound
has already attracted praise from key tastemakers, with both Lauren Laverne and Annie Mac
backing her on the airwaves. Strong support from MixMag, Wonderland and The
Line of Best Fit, and brand support from ASOS, further indicates that Tusks’
star is ascending. It’s helped in no small part by her steady conquering of the
live circuit, selling out The Waiting Room at the end of last year and netting
crucial support slots for Alpines and Submotion Orchestra along the way.
Emily’s
ethereal Tusks project gets more riveting with each subsequent
release. Occupying a similar space to other pensive and heartfelt alt-pop outpourings
like London Grammar and Daughter, Tusks offers us a singular and tender voice.
Her songwriting conveys a sophistication that’s seen in very few artists. ’Toronto’
