Sunshine
Sunshine was written after stepping out the tube station at Seven Sisters in London, on the first sunny & hot day of the year last year. I jumped in a taxi to my producers studio and the radio in the taxi was playing some old rock n roll tunes and everything seemed to lift.
So the feeling of the song came from that… it kinda felt like the weight of all the unimportant stuff we carry round with us being lifted by the sun appearing after so long. And everything was beautiful again; lighter, simpler. The song flowed from those feelings on that day.
Sunshine Acoustic
The acoustic video to Sunshine was recorded in Richmond at The State of The Ark Studios. It’s quite a big song to sing over and over again so this was a first take I think... the feeling was there so we went with it!

The music of
River Matthews flows from a uniquely timeless place. His distinctive voice,
reminiscent of artists like Jeff Buckley
and Sixto ‘Sugarman’ Rodriguez,
creaks and rasps with wisdom and experience. His patient, personal blend of
soul and folk effortlessly transcends eras and genres.
Though his
love for music and performing exists since childhood, River's relationship with
songwriting developed over time. His experience working at a school in his
hometown of Woking, UK, using music as a form of therapy for children with
special needs, helped River deepen his connection to music. The school further
invested in the program by building a music studio, which in turn encouraged
River’s own music career. Throughout his journey, River remains
characteristically modest and authentic. “I really don’t have any set theories
about how my music works,” he says. “I
just need it somehow to feel right to me, that’s all. Nothing much more than
that.”
